5 Ways to Beat the Heat

It’s that time of the year again when you have endless hot days and sleepless nights and almost everyday a headache because of the hot weather. Well, eventhough here in Europe we are in the middle of summer( in some countries it seems like fall or early summer), we do still have to face a few hot days. And yes, summer is great, don’t get me wrong but extreme heat can cause various medical problems(from headaches and heat cramps to death). Here are some tips to follow that can help enough.

Take a cool shower

There is nothing more refreshing after a very warm day than a cold shower. Of course this tip is ideal not only when you stay outside the whole day but also when you stay at home in case you lack a fan, air conditioner or even curtains and blinds to block out the sun so your whole bedroom as not to feel like an oven! Oh and using a wet towel could help as well.

Eat light meals

Summer fruits, vegetables, cold drinks, ice creams and plenty of water are a must in order to hydrate yourself during these days. Therefore, avoid heavy meals like hot soups or spicy and processed food(french fries).

Avoid the brightest hours of the day

Sometimes it is better to stay inside during the whole day but if for some reasons you can’t reschedule any activity, prepare yourself properly. Seek for a shade or air conditioned places and prefer to leave the house early in the morning or later in the evening. Of course, don’t forget to put in your backpack one or two water bottles.

Use sunscreen and a hat

Make sure to apply it on your face and body 30 minutes before leaving home(choose one of at least SPF 30).You should also apply it multiple times a day in case you stay many hours outside. A hat that can cover properly your head is also a must. Many people usually skip this part but they shouldn’t as it can prevent many headaches and keep our head cool.

Wear appropriate clothes

This means that you must use light fabrics such as cotton, rayon, linen that allow you breath. Therefore, avoid those ones considered ”heavy” like polyester, nylon, and wool. Consider also wear bright colors that don’t absorb UV rays that much like pink, white or other pastel colors and say no to darkones such as dark grey or black.

It is highly important to seek medical help for you or someone you know when there are indications for heat-related illness or heatstroke and they cannot be treated at home or they get worse.

I hope you found this article useful and interesting. I am also looking forward for your thoughts and advice! What do you do to deal with the heat?

Thank you for reading and stay safe!
