How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe

Hello everyone! I hope you are doing well. Today’s post is about style but in a more simple yet classy , comfy and practical way or at least this is my definition about Capsule Wardrobes.

The concept:

As a capsule wardrobe we call a small collection of clothes you truly use and that changes every season. The basic idea is to downsize your closet in order to mix and match your clothes so everything goes with everything.

The idea was born in 2004 by Caroline Rector, a fashion lover who decided to change the way she goes shopping when she realized that every time she was on a bad mood, she was going shopping. Eventually, she started minimizing her closet to 37 pieces and she could finally say her wardrobe matched her lifestyle.

Nowdays, more and more people are creating a capsule wardrobe. For that reason, we can see appearing different styles of capsule wardrobe such as the minimalist, the travel or the business capsule wardrobe.

Personally, I do not opt for a specific number of clothes; I just try to keep my closet downsized without the urgent need to go shopping everytime my eye catches something new. I am also on the athleisure side so I don’t need too many formal clothes. Generally I prefer comfy clothes over stylish ones if I have to choose. For example, in winter, I try to skip jeans because fleece leggings or sweater dresses are way more comfortable and warm for me.

Ok, so in this step we are going to talk about the way we follow to create a wardrobe like this.

1. Declutter

If you want to start with a capsule wardrobe, it’s pretty natural to start from decluttering. Take your time and decide which item goes perfect on you and you actually use it all the time, and which one has never appeared to the real world for at least 1 year. If that’s the case, get rid of it. You can give it to a friend or a person who needs it or even sell it! In that way, you create more space in your wardrobe and planning your everyday outfits is now way easier.

  • Note that it’s always up to you and your style preferences whether you’ll add or keep an item. For example, if you do exercise during this week, you will need your workout gear. Another great tip is to prefer quality fabrics like wool, cashmere, cotton and linen. They may last you forever!

2. Use neutral colors

No matter the season, you have to take into account that choosing neutral colors is key. Colors like blue, black, white or red even if they seem quite boring, they can make a huge difference while clever combined. For more variety, give a try to other colors like camel and wine and other patterns and textures like faux leather, velour or stripes.

As you can see below, I have already prepared a visual winter capsule wardrobe including both clothes and accessories. I hope you can see it as an inspiration! For more posts about capsule wardrobes and style, stay tuned !
